What is glyoxylic acid ?
Glyoxylic acid, also known as formoic acid, hydrated glyoxylic acid and oxyacetic acid, chemical formula C2H203, is the simplest aldehyde acid, which exists in immature fruits, tender green leaves and sugar beets. Crystals from water are monoclinic crystals (containing 1/2 crystal water). The relative molecular weight is 70.04. The melting point is 98 ℃. It has an unpleasant taste. It is a strong corrosive acid, which is easy to deliquescence and can form a paste when exposed to the air. It is slightly soluble in ethanol, ether and benzene, and can be freely soluble in water. The aqueous solution is stable and does not deteriorate in air. It exists in aqueous solution in the form of hydration. It can react with most metals except stainless steel.
